The Blue Flames Sporting Club, Leisure & Conference Centre, formally the  Northern Gas sportsground, becoming a private club in 1996. Its primary mission has always been to provide quality sporting facilities to the community at affordable prices.

Blue Flames has an exciting history in its short life and has been host to many International football teams, including Roma, Dynamo Kiev, Juventus, Barcelona and Sporting Lisbon and National teams like England U21s and Turkey.

In 2007, the new indoor Conference & Leisure Centre was opened, offering a third function room with facilities for up to 250 people. It also comprises 3 full size courts for various sports, mainly Netball, 5 a side Football, Tennis and Cricket Nets.

As evidence of the quality of our amenities, Blue Flames Sporting Club have been selected as one of only 20 sites in the North East to be included in the 2012 Olympics brochure as a Pre Games Training Camp (PGTC) 

The well maintained playing fields have been home for several football teams including West Allotment Celtic of the Arngrove Northern League. In 2002, the Northumberland FA built offices for their HQ here. 

Blue Flames also hosts a number of local cricket teams on a good standard Pitch, including purpose built Pavilion and Scorebox.

Tyne & Wear Ladies Netball league have made the Indoor Sports Hall at Whitley Park their competition Centre, and Blue Flames Ladies Netball team use the centre as their Home.

A County standard Bowling Green, with its own Pavilion, Indoor Tennis, 5-a-side Football and Cricket Nets adds further to the wide range of facilities on site that are available for hire at competitive rates to the local community.

A 40 station Fitness Suite offers Life Fitness equipment to Gym members at highly competitive rates. Casual users can use the facilities on a "pay as you go" basis.

 

The Opening Ceremony was performed by the Newcastle United Youth Coach, Peter Beardsley.

Peter has, for several years, trained at Whitley Park as a Newcastle United Player alnd is aware of the excellent facilities available at the Blue Flames Sporting Club.

 

 

Funding for the build was provided by grants from Sport England, SITA Trust, Northern Rock Foundation and some smaller grants as well as commercial loans. The grants amounted to approximately a third of the funding necessary.

Blue Flames is managed by a board of volunteer directors.
